The purpose of this paper is to present a comprehensive literature review of the artificial intelligence-based applications in operational research. The research reveals that operational researchers, within the field of artificial intelligence, are most interested in the development of expert system applications. The identified expert systems are being used for a diverse range of functional organizational activities and problem domains. However, the most popular expert system-based application area is production and operations management. The majority of the expert system applications are developed for semi- or unstructured problems and operational level decisions. Moreover, the majority of the applications support individual decision making as opposed to group or organizational support.
